Rats eat pretty much anything. In the wild, they are not known for being picky eaters. When you are not sure where the next meal is coming from, you can’t afford to be.

Do rats eat avocados? We know that rats eat a lot of fruit, especially in the hotter months, because it is very refreshing.

We also know that rats can climb trees, so getting avocado is not a problem.

Let’s take a look to see if rats eat avocados.

Do Rats Eat Avocados?

Yes, rats will eat avocados. Rats eat a lot of fruit in the wild, and avocados are one of the options that keep them coming back for more.

Many folks who have avocado tree’s in their yard have to take steps to protect their avocado tree’s from rats. Rats can climb trees with ease.

Having a fruit tree in your yard is one of the things that attract rats to your yard and might be responsible for you seeing rats in your garden during the day too.

To recap: Do rats eat avocados? Yes, do you want them in your avocados tree? No!

You had better get rid of these rats fast!

Parts Of An Avocado That Rats Cannot Eat.

Rats should not eat the avocado pit or the skin of the avocado.

In reality, rats will not know this and will likely eat some of the skin to get to the fruit’s flesh.

The pit is a different story! Although a rat will have no trouble chewing the pit (rats can chew through tons of items), it will usually be left once the flesh of the avocado is finished.

Why A Rat Would Eat An Avocado

The most likely reason is that the rat has stumbled upon an avocado!

An avocado tree in your yard may be susceptible to rat invasion, which leaves you open to a rat infestation!

Rats are very adept at climbing trees, as are squirrels. Any of these two rodents will happily munch on the avocados on your tree.

The worst part is that they will be back for more now they know it is there.

Rats will eat fruit whenever it is ripe, but they eat it mostly in the hotter months of the year. It makes sense because this is when the fruit is most likely ripe, but it is also because the rat will need some liquid refreshments. Fruit gives a rat an excellent opportunity to get some fluids in.

If you have seen a rat in your yard or garden, it could be because you have an avocado tree in it!

Let’s face it, with a tasty fruit available in your garden, seeing a rat in the daytime will be common.

Avocados – What’s In It For The Rat?

For a start, avocados are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. Although eating too much avocado will put a rat into tricky situations in the wild, it does help strengthen the rat’s hair, which is vital for keeping them warm in the cold months.

When I say that eating too much avocado will place the rat into some tricky situations in the wild, I mean too much of it will make it a fat rat! Fat rats cannot run as fast as a lean, mean rat machine. If it meets a predator (a cat, for instance), it will have less chance of escape.

We know that cats do eat rats, so a fat rat is going to be a very nice meal if it is caught!

Conclusion

Do rats eat avocados? Yes, they do.

The flesh of an avocado is fair game for a rat. However, the pit is toxic, and if they eat too much of the skin, it is also toxic. Rats usually chew through the skin only to get to the fleshy goodness of the avocado!

Good luck!
